1982 Awake!

Would you like to be guided in your preparations to pass through the symbolical winter of Armageddon just as surely as birds and animals and insects are guided in their preparations to pass through literal winters? It’s simple. Make their guide your guide.

This workman told Dr. Ivy about the coming battle of Armageddon. The doctor had known Yvonne since childhood, so he called her and demanded: “Yvonne, you were raised a Witness. Why didn’t you tell me about Armageddon?” “I’ll call my brother Don,” she said, “and get him to explain it to you.” The result was that Dr. Ivy and his wife and Yvonne and I began studying the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses, Don Belloit conducting the study.

Writes John F. Walvoord in his book Armageddon, Oil and the Middle East Crisis: “It would be difficult not to be troubled if Scripture did not clearly show that inevitable martyrdom in the great tribulation would not be the next expectation for believers in this age.

1982 The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom

By our going forward as ministers of the Kingdom we are giving people something to hope for, something to sustain them until Armageddon puts an end to Satan’s system of things.

U.S. President on Armageddon

As reported in the New York Times, after a recent discussion with President Reagan, Alabama Senator Howell Heflin told newsmen: “We got off into the Bible a little bit. We were talking about the fact that the Middle East, according to the Bible, would be the place where Armageddon would start. . . . He interprets the Bible and Armageddon to mean that Russia is going to get involved in it.”

It is commendable that such high-ranking public officials do not dismiss lightly what the Bible says about Armageddon. However, is Armageddon actually a catastrophic final war between blocs of nations as these officials apparently believe? Well, the Bible’s reference to the word “Armageddon” includes not just the Eastern bloc of nations, but also the Western bloc when it depicts “the kings of the earth and of the whole world” all gathered on one side of the great battle.

Hence, the great war at the figurative “place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon” will not be a nuclear holocaust between national groups. Rather, it is a selective war in which God will use his power to cleanse the earth of wickedness.—Revelation 16:14, 16, Authorized Version; compare Revelation 19:11-19.

But now they will find themselves battling with none other than Jehovah’s “Lord of lords and King of kings.” They will be at Armageddon.

What next? Why, the millennial kingdom will be here! How the Armageddon survivors will rejoice!

He emphasized that all Christians, female as well as male, must serve courageously, especially in these dangerous pre-Armageddon days.—1 Corinthians 16:13; Psalm 68:11.

As Revelation 17:5, 16, 17 shows, all segments of false religion worldwide—“Babylon the Great”—will be devastated at that same time, preliminary to the war at Armageddon, the finale of the “great tribulation.”—Revelation 16:14, 16; 19:11-21.

At Armageddon there will be no refuge for the wicked.

Someone said: “It was as if Armageddon had already passed and this was the resurrection of all these faithful ones!” Everyone was beaming.

What action will Jehovah take? The Bible prophesies that a God-ordained universal cleanup is imminent. It is the long-foretold war of Armageddon.

Armageddon, Jehovah’s eviction judgment, will clear the earth of all the human contaminators and polluters of this precious planet.

What will follow Armageddon’s purge? Jehovah has promised: “Here I am creating new heavens and a new earth.”

Thus, in April of 1923, my twin brother Norman and I, when we were not yet eighteen years of age, found ourselves reporting at Bethel, the Society’s Brooklyn headquarters, ready to begin working on this new project.

My first assignment was feeding the booklet Our Lord’s Return onto a stitching machine. The overseer explained how to do it and, pointing to a huge pile of booklets, he said: “Hurry up and get the job done because Armageddon is coming!”

There, at Armageddon, the reigning king of the “heavenly Jerusalem” will gain the decisive victory over all nations that have given “their power and authority to the wild beast.”—Revelation 17:12-14; 16:16.

IT IS reported that Theodore Roosevelt, when campaigning for the presidency of the United States of America, exclaimed: “We stand at Armageddon, and we battle for the Lord!” Roosevelt knew from the Bible that there was to be a decisive fight at the “place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.” (Revelation 16:16, Authorized Version)

1982 Yearbook of Jehovah’s Witnesses

With Armageddon drawing ever nearer, how encouraging for young people is the following from one of Jehovah’s Witnesses who has been a faithful missionary for many years. She states:

“I was born in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II. My parents felt that Armageddon would be right on its heels, so we children were encouraged from our very tender years to use our time wisely in this dying old system in Jehovah’s service. From the year the Watchtower Bible School of Gilead opened, when I was only four years old, my mother would talk to me about it and to have it as my goal. At the age of six years, after my first school term, I vacation pioneered. Each succeeding summer vacation I pioneered until I graduated from high school at which time I entered the pioneer service. Another thing that contributed to my formation was that, during my teenage years, my father arranged his work schedule so that he could be a regular pioneer, setting a good example for us children.

By the year 1949 there were 25 missionaries working in Chile. The results of their work could be seen in that there were 211 publishers in the country. This was a fine increase from the 65 publishers in 1945 when the first missionaries arrived. But there was still only one Witness for every 20,000 persons, a clear indication of the desperate need for help. The big question in the minds of the brothers was not, “When will Armageddon come?” but “How are we going to get the ‘good news’ preached to all the people before the end comes?”
