JWs and the York Fair

September 10, 2018 By Sean

It’s been awhile since I’ve written anything regarding a physical interaction with any JW.  I’ve had some email interactions with a Seventh Day Adventist thanks to a coworker to which I’ll be releasing the emails (without any personal information as per my policy).  That said, today was different.  The fall season is great for one thing-fair season.  Residing in South Central PA means an annual trip to the York Fair-America’s oldest.

Growing up spending some time on a farm working for a church elder than moving onto a horse breeding farm brings back many a good memories.  That’s the start, then there’s PLENTY of food to eat.  However, I was testing out one of those massage chairs and the Misses tells me that the JWs had a booth set up.  I got up and went over.

Here’s a very quick rundown regarding it.  Its my “go to topic” when I don’t have much time.  I walk up and informed them that I had met with some Witnesses for a period of time and asked for a copy of their New World Translation.  The lady pointed me to look at the organization's official website (I almost feel bad for them since they can only say "go to the website") Side note-if you come across a JW set up, they will most likely NOT have a bible on display.  That means the priority is pushing their publications and the bible (even though their version is altered) is of secondary importance.

So here’s how it went….

I told them I do not understand how they believe what they do about the resurrection (Witnesses believe that Jesus was raised as a spirit.  The conversation centered on the following verses:

I Peter 3:18 (NWT)-For Christ died once for all time for sins, a righteous person for unrighteous ones, in order to lead you to God. He was put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.

They use this to demonstrate that Jesus is a spirit body.

I had the female Witness read John 2:19-21 (she read through verse 22 in the New World Translation)-19Jesus replied to them: “Tear down this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said: “This temple was built in 46 years, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21But he was talking about the temple of his body. 22When, though, he was raised up from the dead, his disciples recalled that he used to say this, and they believed the scripture and what Jesus had spoken.

Luke 24:36-43(New World Translation)-36While they were speaking of these things, he himself stood in their midst and said to them: “May you have peace.” 37 But because they were terrified and frightened, they imagined that they were seeing a spirit. 38So he said to them: “Why are you troubled, and why have doubts come up in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; touch me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones just as you see that I have.” 40And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41But while they were still not believing for sheer joy and amazement, he said to them: “Do you have something there to eat?” 42 So they handed him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it before their eyes.

When we started, they were more than willing to chat about the resurrection.  I set things up by saying John gave a prophetic statement.  They initially agreed that it was.  I had the gentleman read the account in Luke.  When he was done, I “set the scene” by reading the first few verses so that the they would realize that it was just after the resurrection.  We both agreed that Jesus was seen many times in the 40 days prior to his ascension to heaven.  He said that “flesh and blood” cannot inherit the kingdom of heaven to which I agreed and pointed him to verse 39 and there’s a difference with “flesh and bones” vice “blood.”  I asked how the organization believes that Jesus is a spirit when Jesus said something totally different.  The full effect of JW training kicks in.

He deflects by saying that we believe:

Jesus was the first and only thing Jehovah created based on Colossians 1.

Jesus was produced based on Proverbs 8 (he couldn’t even locate the verse so I had to inform him)

He said a few other things and the lady interjected, “are you here to talk about the Trinity?”  I said, “nope, and even if I did, I’m willing to conclude what you thing the Trinity is and what the bible describes what the Trinity is are two different things.”  So I took him back to the resurrection and asked the question this way, “you’re telling me one thing about Jesus’ resurrection, the Bible is saying the total opposite, which one is correct (remember I had him read Luke)?”  If you were there, you’d have seen the cognitive dissonance play out on his face between the organization’s teachings versus what the Bible says.  I let him “waffle” for a few minutes.  The lady beside him is scrambling.  What possibly felt like an eternity for him had the lady interrupt and say, “here’s the study bible and see what it says.”  He rejected it as he was still trying to rectify the clear delineation between the bible and what the organization teaches.

He eventually answered by saying that angels manifested themselves.  He even had what I presume to be an elderly witness couple walk by.  A few moments later, he received a phone call and said, “I’ll call you back.”  I let him give a few examples throughout the bible.  I retorted that, “Jesus stated that he was NOT a spirt.”  The man said, “show me where it says this (mind you he had just read it).”  So I had him read verse 39 AGAIN.  He then tried to give some other faulty line of reasoning.  From here, the lady said that some things Jesus said are to be taken figuratively and other things literally.  She also stated, “God raised Jesus.”  I retorted, “Jesus raised himself so what does that make Jesus? Also, you say some things are literal, some things figurative.  In Luke it was LITERALLY His body that He told the disciples to touch.”

The gentleman cuts in and tries to change the topic and says, “we believe this about the resurrection.”  I cut him off (I had enough topic changes which is their practice when they feel things aren’t going well) and asked a question was direct, simple, and short: You’re saying one thing, Jesus is saying something different.  Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way the truth and the life”  He finished it saying, “no one comes to the Father but by Him.”  I agreed and asked, “you’re saying one thing, Jesus said something totally different.  Are you making out Jesus’ words a contradiction and therefore he’s a liar?”

The reaction: SILENCE.

He didn’t answer initially nor could he.  I saw a physical display on his face regarding the spiritual battle taking hold.  He tried to talk.  I talked over him and reiterated again, “you have two choices, believe what Jesus said as contained within the inspired word of God OR believe what the Watchtower says.  I’m going to leave and allow you to think on that.”

With that I walked off.

I saw them later tonight as I was leaving and turned behind me.  I’m pretty sure he knew who I was from behind (John Deere hats stick out) and I moved to the side to wait for one of my kids.  It looked like they picked up the pace and with that, the evening was over.

So as always, I will ask that you the reader prays something good will come of this exchange which was shorter than normal but Lord willing be profitable and that a seed was planted within both individuals.

Book Study: It May Be Over

September 16, 2017 By Sean

Good morning!!!! I trust everything is going well for you out there.  As seen by the title, I believe that the study may be over.  Let's recap real quick....

A month ago, I was told there was a convention in Reading, PA.  This year the theme is "Don't Give Up!"  The quote by attendee Dana Kinney sums it all up, "it's like a spiritual boost."  This is needed since I previously wrote about why that title may have been used since the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society is hemorrhaging membership-badly.  With that in mind, I was supposed to meet last week with my JW friends.  However, there's been another development.....

My daughter has earned a spot in the local junior symphony orchestra for the viola.  I'm immensely proud of her.  As a result, there is a time commitment.  Every Saturday morning for the foreseeable future, she need taken/picked up from there.  I had left a message for the custodian's husband to give me a call on his smartphone (he's coming along slowly but surely in the technology arena).  Since there was a possibility he may not have checked it, I did follow up by sending a message to the elder.  With that in mind, I still haven't heard back from either of them.

With that in mind, I have a few thoughts:

Although the Jehovah's Witnesses propagate an accursed gospel since it differs from what Paul taught in Galatians 1, they are highly commended for taking things at times serious enough to go weekly door to door.  I say "at times" since I saw on Facebook I did see this.  You'll see they want to "spread" the message so much they are sitting back and relaxing.  I wonder if they are merely "counting time" waiting for the BBQ to start.

They have possibly/probably given up on me since they realized I'm not going to join.  Although there were times where I let go a "little" thing, I wanted to always impress upon them something that I figured was major so that they had to think about it after they left.  The biggest things in my mind were the physical bodily resurrection of Jesus and by taking the time to develop a relationship (which is key), I was successfully able to explain the Diety of Jesus Christ without an argument.  Along with that, by taking time, I was able to show them old literature and at the very least, the custodian's husband did take it.  If he threw it away once he left, I'll never know.

From our conversations, something else I had previously forgotten to mention but want to here.  The elder said at one point he was basically checking the custodian's husband's computer history.  Perhaps it was nothing but there is a possibility that maybe the custodian's husband was asking questions that the elder couldn't answer.  Maybe he was searching on the internet for things on his own.  Maybe he was instructed to never call me again.  This is interesting considering the custodian's husband stopped out a few weeks back on a Sunday afternoon by himself to simply say "hello" and we had a "trivial" chat for a few minutes.

All the above in mind, I have been "dropped" before by the elder a few years back.  They didn't mark my house as they had previously done since they came out last year.  Hopefully, I'll get to see them again.  If not, Lord willing, there were enough seeds planted to cause sufficient questioning and they all will get to know the Jesus of the Bible prior to the end of their earthly course.

If they don't come back, that will give me a lot more time which is needed especially considering I'm having to work overtime right now.  I'm not complaining just explaining but aside from our two to three hour meetings, there's me writing things up which takes up to eight hours and this is after taking some time to prep before they come.  That could be an hour or two considering the chapter we were going to discuss.

Quick update on the Armageddon project... I'm coming down to the home stretch now.  I'm down to 149 more documents.  I wanted to get done by the end of September but it may take me until the end of the year at this point.  I've been breaking documents out now but this project when it's done, it will be the most comprehensive set of Watchtower Bible and Tract Society quotes that will have ever been produced on one word.  One observation then I'm done, the usage of the word Armageddon really "took off" under Joseph Rutherford.

Below is a bit of a teaser:

When those in the covenant have been brought to the unity of the faith in Christ Jesus, “unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ” (Eph. 4:13), it is then that the new covenant is inaugurated toward them and they are made official witnesses of Jehovah; and their work as such witnesses must be done before Armageddon.

Jehovah.  1934. p. 211

While other Scriptural texts show that at Armageddon there will be great physical disturbances, these words of the apostle Paul recorded in Hebrews concerning the inauguration of the new covenant do not appear to apply at all to literal shaking or violent movements to and fro of natural objects.

Jehovah.  1934. p. 217

There will be no occasion for such ministry after Armageddon; and this is further proof that the new covenant is made and inaugurated and accomplishes its purpose prior to Armageddon.

Jehovah.  1934. p. 237

By his prophet Jehovah had foretold the coming of Elijah to do a preparatory work before “the great and the terrible day of the Lord”. (Mal. 3:1; 4:5, 6) Without a doubt Christ Jesus himself is the messenger and antitypical Elijah meant by this prophecy, and who must do a certain preparatory work before the great and terrible day of Jehovah. This prophecy must have its fulfilment just preceding Armageddon.

Jehovah.  1934. p. 336

The “winter time” is the hard time, and the time when the great fight is on. It symbolizes the time of Armageddon.

Jehovah.  1934. p. 358

Book Study Cancelled in Favor of Convention

August 11, 2017 By Sean

Greetings!  This is out today for one very simple reason.  I received the a text from the custodian's husband yesterday saying, "going to assembly this weekend, talk later."  So with that, I'm free for the weekend.

I'm kind of baffled as to why I got the above message.  I do have some thoughts.  The last meeting that we had contained what they would believe was "unsavory" due to faith being sufficient and more scriptures being utilized vs. James.  Paul spoke in a direct contradiction to what the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society "preaches."  I still find it amazing the way mind control works.  The Word of God is clear when it directly conflicts what the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society teaches.  They (with the exception of the custodian's husband admitting that Jesus rose bodily once) will usually exhibit cognitive dissonance and rationalize away what the Word says when it counters the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.

I've been invited to a convention by the elder a few years back but had always politely declined.  Perhaps depending on how the "study" went this time around, they were going to get me to go this year.

I also thought it was slightly on the odd/rude side to set a meeting and cancel when the convention schedule is laid out well in advance.  Oh well, I guess in their minds, "one lost sheep" like myself isn't worth missing a convention over.  On the other side though, perhaps he needs strengthened given the title of the 2017 convention program "Don't Give Up!"  I personally don't agree with some of the things John Cedars believes but this is a pretty good video overall:

Why a title such as this?  Nothing is done by the organization without an agenda.  The organization is losing people bought on by its own actions relating to doctrine, changes, and practices at an alarming rate, hence the convention title.  Why?  Exposure in a variety of formats.  Mainstream Christian churches are increasingly aware.  The Australian Royal Commission highlighted child sexual abuse running unchecked in the organization.  Former members have created quite a number of videos for public consumption on the internet ranging from personal websites to commercial platforms such as YouTube, iTunes Podcasts, and SoundCloud.

Growth is occurring predominately in areas without the internet.  In the video the U.S. is has only grown by a minuscule amount which is odd considering "Jehovah's blessing" should be flowing ABUNDANTLY in the land where the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society is centered.  However, since there is minimal growth here, the organization is going to have to convert many more in the Third World since their currency is less than the U.S. dollar.

One way of the only ways of countering this onslaught has been the organization embracing the internet which it once despised found at this page here.  However, this could very well backfire.  I did a Google search on "Jehovahs witness."  The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society only held three links.  One was Wikipedia and the others were news or mainstream Christian based sites.  People who are curious will investigate even though the study conductor will tell an interested householder to not look.

On a different, yet related note the second season of Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath has started.  Cults have similar parallels and there are some when it comes to Scientology and Jehovah's Witnesses.

With that, I'll be awaiting a call from my friends.
