1987 Awake!

Daniel’s words indicate that there will be competitive coexistence between the two leading world powers until God brings an end to their rivalry at his war of Armageddon.—Revelation 16:14-16.

Awake!  January 8, 1987 p. 10

Yes, Jehovah’s Witnesses have risen above divisive politics and nationalism, which result in wars and terrorism. They now form a people living in genuine peace, and they are preparing for the time, very soon, when the earth will be ruled only by God’s Kingdom. That will not be brought about by world conversion but by a world cleansing at God’s war of Armageddon.—Matthew 24:37-39; Revelation 16:14, 16.

Awake!  January 8, 1987 p. 14

I’d spent enough time on the scientific, intellectual aspects. It was time for feelings to take over. These people were doing it. These people were living it. I wanted to be with them. It wasn’t some date, it wasn’t Armageddon, it wasn’t saving my skin. It was my heart talking. These people are right. These other groups are wrong. I want to be where it’s right.

Terrorists now set their sights on businessmen as one of their prime targets. “Forty-eight percent of all terrorist kidnapings have involved businessmen,” says Brian M. Jenkins, security director for the Rand Corporation, in Leaders magazine. Terrorists kidnap corporate executives to finance violent operations. There have been twice as many terrorist attacks against businesses in the 1980’s as there were in the early 1970’s. “If terrorists do not spark an Armageddon with chemical, biological or even nuclear weapons, as some observers predict,” he adds, “incidents of large-scale, indiscriminate murder will increase.”

But after death, now what? Would the war possibly lead to something bigger, perhaps to “the war of the great day of God the Almighty” called Armageddon? (Compare Revelation 6:4; 16:14, 16.)

Awake!  April 8, 1987 p. 21

In a discourse delivered at their 1942 convention in Cleveland, Ohio, the speaker said: “Before Armageddon comes, the Scriptures show, a peace must come. . . . Those of a democratic mind hope for a United States of the world, a ‘family of nations,’ a ‘world association’ based on the United Nations.”

Awake!  April 22, 1987 p. 19

“The information on the main subjects, such as Armageddon, Creation, Evolution, Fate, Kingdom, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Last Days, Suffering, and Wickedness, are so useful in explaining Bible truths to people.”

It dealt with Isaiah 9:6, 7 and the context of those verses, showing how that prophecy fittingly applied to Jesus Christ. The speaker stated in his conclusion that Michael “will crown his brilliant career with the victory at Armageddon that will resound without fading at all to time eternal . . . So, then, onward to greater world prominence than ever before, all you witnesses of Jehovah, with complete trust in your God and his reigning King, the ‘Prince of Peace’!

However, before peace is restored, things more terrible than this will be wrought by the King’s right hand when he ‘rides in the cause of truth’ at Armageddon to destroy all of God’s enemies on earth. (Psalm 45:4; Revelation 16:14, 16; 19:17, 18) C

What Lars read moved him to baptism—March 1940. Consider another example. Two pioneer ministers from the southern United States said:

“A woman was contacted in the magazine work. She’s the treasurer of a large Baptist church and a very serious Bible student too. When she read the series on the theme of Armageddon in the Watchtower issues of January 1 to February 15, 1985, she was delighted. Previously, she had spent hours researching that subject and came up with nothing except the scripture found at Revelation 16:16. She had asked her minister: ‘What is Armageddon? Can you explain it?’ He looked at her and said, ‘That’s a deep subject,’ and then walked away. She remarked that The Watchtower, on the other hand, answered her every question and that this was the only source she had found with the needed scriptures on the subject of Armageddon.”

The post-Armageddon “inhabited earth,” made up of all mankind then on earth, will not be

judged according to past sins committed during the present system of things.

Worldwide, there are people whose hearts are inclined toward righteousness and who will rejoice to learn how they may become identified with the “great crowd” that will survive Armageddon. (Revelation 7:9, 14)

Lesson for Us: Like the Jews of old, Jehovah’s Witnesses today await deliverance—this time through the storm of Armageddon. (Revelation 16:14, 16)

This “Mighty God” will crown his brilliant career with the victory at Armageddon that will resound without fading at all to time eternal.

By your proclamation everywhere of the message of the Kingdom and its coming victory over the world conspiracy at Armageddon, be all of you for signs and miracles to the honor of Jehovah.

The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. April 1, 1987 p. 20

With full confidence in the Universal Sovereign, Jehovah God, and his Field Marshal, Jesus Christ, who is over the innumerable hosts of seraphs, cherubs, and holy angels of heaven, I look forward, at this writing, along with millions of fellow Witnesses, to what the Bible shows still lies ahead: the destruction of Babylon the Great, the world empire of false religion, and the war of the great day of God the Almighty at Armageddon, culminating in the victory of victories on the part of the Universal Sovereign, Jehovah God, who is “from eternity to eternity.” Hallelujah!—Psalm 90:2, Byington.

The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 1, 1987 p. 30

Who will survive the devastating global cleanup, or Armageddon? A very interesting fact that more and more people are coming to realize is that this heavenly government is already operating and preparing people to survive Armageddon! (Revelation 16:14-16)

The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1987 p. 6

Meek ones not only will survive Armageddon but, by remaining faithful to God, will also inherit everlasting life.

The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1987 p. 6

How joyful for Armageddon survivors, who will be able to welcome their loved ones back from the dead!—John 5:28, 29.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1987 p. 6

What time is this? Sometimes the expression “time of the end” refers to the time of the end of this system of things, from 1914 to Armageddon. (Daniel 8:17, 19; 12:4)

The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. July 1, 1987 p. 13

And it certainly supports the fact that Michael is Jesus Christ, since Jesus is Jehovah’s appointed King, commissioned to destroy all the nations at Armageddon.

THE angel’s prophecy to Daniel has brought us all the way from the fourth century B.C.E. to Armageddon.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. July 1, 1987 p. 21

So when saying that his disciples would not complete their circuit of preaching “until the Son of man arrives,” Jesus was prophetically telling us that his disciples would not complete the circuit of the entire inhabited earth with the preaching about God’s established Kingdom before the glorified King Jesus Christ would arrive as Jehovah’s executional officer at Armageddon.

The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. August 1, 1987 p. 8, 9

So I belong to a unique and highly privileged generation—old enough to have seen the beginning of the sign of Christ’s presence in 1914 and yet possibly still young enough to live to see its completion at Armageddon.—Matthew 24:3, 33, 34.

The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. August 1, 1987 p. 21

Surely, we do not want to be among those breathing the “air” of this system when Jehovah clears away both pollution and polluters at Armageddon.

Others believed the work was approaching its end, and Armageddon was expected at any time.

Public talk: The widely advertised lecture to be given by Brother Rutherford was “Armageddon—The Battle of Almighty God.” At the last moment, however, it was banned for the public by the cantonal authorities of Lucerne. The brothers were able to hear it, but a crowd of about 2,000 others were kept from getting into the hall because of police interference.
